Aristides de Sousa Mendes (18 July 1885 - 3 April 1954) was a prestigious Portuguese diplomat who saved 30,000 lives from the Holocaust, frantically issuing them visas that were intended for both individuals and families. From 16 to 23 June 1940, Aristides de Sousa Mendes disobeyed the orders imposed by the dictator Salazar, guided by the dictates of his inner moral conscience. Aristides de Sousa Mendes do Amaral e Abranches was born on July 19, 1885 in Cabanas de Viriato, near Viseu. Son of Maria Angelina Ribeiro de Abranches and Judge José de Sousa Mendes, he graduated in Law from the University of Coimbra with his twin brother César, when he was 22 years old. In 1908 he married his cousin Angelina, with whom he would have 14 children. He started his diplomatic career at a very young age and in 1910 became Demerara's consul in British Guiana. He worked as a consul in British Guiana, in Zanzibar, in Brazil (Curitiba and Porto Alegre), in the United States (San Francisco and Boston), in Spain (Vigo), in Luxembourg, in Belgium and, finally, in France (Bordeaux) . He was a family man and a patriarch who never separated from his wife and children, providing them with academic education, as well as painting, drawing and music classes. One of his sons said one day:
"We had a real chamber orchestra in our house and we regularly invited people to attend our concerts. We played Chopin, Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, among others. "
